Vidár Waldorf Iskola - Gyöngyös

Aktuális információk:

WELCOME to the VIDÁR WALDORF SCHOOL

We are a tiny Waldorf school in Gyöngyös, Hungary. Gyöngyös is a town of 33 000, and is 80 km northeast of the Hungarian capital, Budapest. Situated at the foot of the Mátra mountain, - part of the Carpathians, - Gyöngyös is often referred to as “the gate to the Mátra”. Kékestető, the highest peak of the country is part of Gyöngyös municipality. The city has been part of the landscape for a long time; it was given town privileges by King Charles Robert of Anjou in 1334.

Waldorf pedagogy in Hungary dates back to 1926, that is when the very first Waldorf school outside Germany was opened - in the heart of Hungary. Due to political circumstances, though, we had to wait until the Revolution of 1989 before another school following in Rudolf Steiner's footsteps could be established in this country. Today (in 2010), 25 of the world's 995 Waldorf schools are in Hungary.

The Vidár Waldorf School (grades 1-8) was established in the year 2000, in the city of Gyöngyös. The Forest Waldorf Kindergarten (“Erdei Waldorf Óvoda”) was founded in 1996, and it is situated at the edge of a nearby village, Gyöngyöstarján. These are the only Waldorf institutions in Heves county. Both institutions are run by the same foundation, the Mélyvölgyhegyi School Foundation. The Foundation's name literally translates to “deep mountain valley”. Our official public interest status is outstanding public benefit organization.

We are a tiny school, but our encouragement and enthusiasm has never been greater. The staff and the families are very committed to the school. The classes are well-organised, and the children are making good progress and are happy studying here. The children who graduated from our school were all admitted to the high school of their choice.

We are working on making the school more present in the local community by appearing in the local media and organizing events that are open to the public. As spring rolls around, our yard turns green, and full of life. Before Easter, visitors can try some crafts, participate in traditional spring games, or pet bunnies. We also have information meetings and an Open Week for the families interested. As summer comes, we have Drama Days and lots of hiking tours. In the summer we meet for play days, hiking, and to do the work needed around the kindergarten and school, such as painting and gardening. In the autumn we celebrate the harvest, St., Michael, and of course St. Martin - who actually was born in Savaria/Pannonia, which is present day Szombathely/Hungary. As winter comes, we prepare for the Christmas Bazaar, and have an Advent Spiral. We also organize reading circles, and art exhibitions.

We wish residents of our town and the surrounding villages be more aware of the possibilities at hand, so that families can make a well-informed decision about schooling. Now, that private schools are once again allowed in the country, such a decision should not be all about finances. Waldorf pedagogy has proven to be a worthy option throughout the years, and we wish to overcome the financial obstacles.

The Hungarian state provides us with the so-called “compulsory legislative support” that is paid to schools after every single pupil in the country. This amount usually covers approx. 40% of what is necessary to run a school. State-owned public schools normally receive the rest of the budget from the local government. In case of a foundation school like ours, however, the rest of the money required to maintain the school is raised from the foundation support each family pays (something like a tuition fee, depending on how much each family is able to contribute), as well as tenders and other resources, like outside donations. It is possible to support our school, whether or not your child attends our institution.

Possible forms of support:

1. If you live in Hungary, you can offer us 1% of your tax

To do this, you'll need to fill out a declaration form, the so-called “Rendelkezési nyilatkozat” (download in [doc] or [pdf]), and send it to the Hungarian Tax and Financial Control Administration (APEH). You can check our Foundation at the tax office's homepage by the tax number: 18575778 1 10

2. Direct financial contribution

Our school is an outstanding public benefit aka non-profit organization, so by donating you can be eligible for tax deduction. Be the amount small or large, you can ensure the existence of the only Waldorf institution in Heves county. For more information you can write to us at: adrien.safranka@gyongyosiwaldorf.hu

3. Material support

Other things than money can also come in handy. We decorate and develop the school with our own means. If you have anything that you think would be useful for us, - every day use items, school supplies, decoration items, tools, etc. - you can contact us at adrien.safranka@gyongyosiwaldorf.hu or Vidár Waldorf School, 3200 Gyöngyös, Ifjúság u. 2. Hungary.

4. Other support, e.g. advertising, discount

Money not spent is money saved. Certain items, like school supplies have to be purchased and if we can do it at a more reasonable price, we will do so. That goes for advertising as well. We try to be present in the local media, and we set up a stand at city events and village festivals in the region. Any contribution, help, suggestion is welcome.

5. Ideas

There are surely more ideas to be explored, if you have any thoughts, don't hesitate to share it with us.
